Biography

Viktor Vadász has been working as deputy director and director of programmes at the Academy of European Law (ERA) since January 2022. Before this, he was working as a judge in Hungary, dealing with criminal cases at the Budapest Regional Court. Between 2012 and 2015, he was the director of the Hungarian Academy of Justice; between 2015 and 2017, he was the head of the Department of International Relations at the Budapest Regional Court; and between 2017 and 2018, he was the leader of the Criminal Collegium of the Budapest Regional Court. From January 2018, he was an elected member of the Hungarian National Judicial Council, where he was responsible for international relations and was also the media spokesperson for the Council. In 2019–2021, he represented the Hungarian council on the Executive Board of the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary. Since June 2022, he has represented ERA in the EJTN Working Group Programme as convenour.

Digitalisation of judicial cooperation in criminal matters

The Commission work on digitalisation in criminal matters concentrates on providing faster, secure and reliable communication in cross border judicial cooperation procedures in criminal matters, guarantying at the same time protection of procedural and human rights. This workshop is dedicated to the IT system that will allow such a communication among Member States competent authorities (e-EDES/e-CODEX) and the upcoming novelties in digital communication in criminal matters, as well as on the digitalisation of exchanging electronic evidence, transfers of criminal proceedings and communication with Eurojust.

Biography

I am a Slovenian judge, currently working as a temporary agent for the DG JUST at the European Commission in the area of digitalisation of justice. I was involved as a chair of the Council e-Justice Working party in the negotiations with European Parliament during adoption of the e-CODEX Regulation. My main area of work covers combining legislation and development of IT systems providing for digital communication in cross border cooperation. .

Biography

Prof. dr. Raf Van Ransbeeck (Ph.D.) started his career as a lawyer (advocate) at the bar of Dendermonde (Sint-Niklaas) in 1994, after which he was active in the academical world. In 2006, he was appointed as a judge at the Commercial Tribunal in Brussels (Juge au Tribunal de commerce de Bruxelles) and was promoted in 2012 to judge at the Court of Appeal of Brussels (Conseiller à la cour d’appel de Bruxelles). He also has some additional commitments as a magistrate, such as member of the Management board of Belgian section of the International Union of Magistrates and member of the Civil European Judicial Network (EJN) in Belgium. Prof. dr. Van Ransbeeck is also organizer of various seminars and conferences as well as editor of various academic articles and books. In November 2015, Prof. dr. Van Ransbeeck was appointed as the director of the Belgian Judicial Training Institute (IGO-IFJ, www.igo-ifj.be) for a term of six years, which he combines with a 10% part-time job as professor (assistant professor) at a Belgian university. His appointment as the director of IGO-IFJ has been renewed for six years in November 2021. In his capacity as director, he is member of the Steering Committee of the European Judicial Training Network (EJTN) and convener of its Exchange working group. Furthermore, IGO-IFJ is a member of the Euro-Arab Judicial Training Network (EAJTN) and Prof. dr. Van Ransbeeck has chaired and vice-chaired the Network on behalf of IGO-IFJ since 2019 for a 2-term year which has been extended with one year. In 2021, he was appointed, in his personal capacity, as one of the 25 members of the Expert Group on European Judicial Training within the European Commission for a renewable term of 4 years. Since November 2022, Prof. dr. Van Ransbeeck serves as IOJT Deputy Secretary-General.
